Students Sue Nurse Anesthesia Program Claiming Wages Due For Clinical Work

Two former students at Wolford College in Naples, Florida, are suing their alma mater in Federal District court and asking for class action certification claiming Wolford and Collier Anesthesia, P.A., an anesthesia group, owe them wages for the clinical experience part of the program. The lawsuit also seeks payment of overtime. 

When Law Med first heard that some former anesthesia students were suing their training program and an anesthesia group responsible for the anesthesia care at a portion of the clinical sites used by the college, for payment of hourly wages for the clinical experience they gained, we sort of rolled our eyes and thought “Seriously?”

AZ Cosmetic Surgeon Guilty On 2 Counts Murder 1 Count Manslaughter

As we previously reported, Dr. Peter Normann, a self proclaimed cosmetic surgeon without formal training in surgery, was charged with 2 counts of second-degree murder and one count of manslaughter in the deaths of three of his surgical patients. Last Friday, after a day and a half of deliberations, a Maricopa County AZ Superior Court jury found him guilty on all counts.

Normann was found guilty of second-degree murder in the deaths of Ralph Gonzalez, 33, of Scottsdale AZ, and Leslie Ann Ray, 53, of California, and of manslaughter for the death of Alicia Santizo Blanco, 41, of Gilbert AZ. Since the trial began on June 10, Normann’s attorneys, John Johnsonand Vikki Liles, argued that the deaths were all accidental, the result of known risks of plastic surgery, and argued that if Normann, 50, were found guilty, all doctors would be criminally liable for procedures gone wrong.

Missouri CRNAs Win Appeal In Pain Management Practice Case

MISSOURI ASSOCIATION OF NURSE ANESTHETISTS, INC., GLENN KUNKEL, M.D., AND KEVIN SNYDERS, CRNA, Appellants, v. STATE BOARD OF REGISTRATION FOR THE HEALING ARTS, Respondent, No. SC 91302. Supreme Court of Missouri, En Banc. Opinion issued June 28, 2011.

The Missouri Supreme Court has ruled that the State Board of Registration for the Healing Arts cannot rely upon nor enforce the contents of a letter it published on or about February 7, 2008  regarding CRNA pain management injection practice which said:

After researching the current statute[s], rules, and regulations governing the practice of medicine and the practice of nursing it was the Board’s decision to advise you that Chapter 334 RSMo authorizes a physician to delegate professional responsibilities to a person who is qualified by training, skill, competency, age, experience, or licensure to perform such responsibilities.
