Suspended Ca Anesthesiologist Gave Daughter Propofol 500 Times: Hold Judgement

propofol

The California medical board has suspended the license of a doctor accused of giving his daughter hundreds of at-home doses of propofol,  the powerful anesthetic that killed Michael Jackson, as a last-ditch, and effective, treatment for her debilitating chronic pain.

In an order filed Thursday, California Medical Board officials said Dr. Robert Markman of Northridge, a retired anesthesiologist who practiced from 1974-2001, is barred from practicing medicine pending a full administrative determination from the Board. He has never been disciplined by the Board in the past and has not been sued for malpractice during his years of practice. Based on the facts as presented in the Board’s order,  the Law Med Blog is quite hesitant in passing negative judgment regarding Markman’s actions. While there are generally ethical issues when treating family members, assuming the facts are as stated he may be the best and only chance his daughter has for … (Continued…)

Judge: Suspend License Of Physician Charged With Propofol Rape

Jon Norberg

BISMARCK, N.D. — An administrative law judge has recommended a Fargo doctor’s medical license be suspended indefinitely for frequently giving propofol, a powerful sedative and anesthetic and the drug that killed Michael Jackson, to a woman in his home. Judge Allen Hoberg determined that Jon David Norberg, 41, engaged in the “performance of unprofessional conduct likely to deceive, defraud, or harm the public” as described in state law. Norberg is out on bail after being charged with gross sexual imposition and felony reckless endangerment. The North Dakota Board of Medical Examiners will consider whether to suspend his medical license indefinitely next week.

His accuser was not a patient of his and she alleges the incidents took place at his home on multiple occasions over a period of 18 months.

In a prepared filing, Norberg told the board he used the drug to relieve the woman’s pain and help her to … (Continued…)

Wake Forest Anesthesiologist Charged With Serial Indecent Exposure

John Charles Gerancher

A Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center anesthesiologist has apparently made a habit of exposing his genitalia to various women on the street. And being charged with the crime has been no deterrent to repeat performances.

Police in Rock Hill, S.C., said 47-year-old John Charles Gerancher was lurking in a campus parking lot on the afternoon of Sept. 13 when he walked up to a woman, pulled up his shorts and exposed his genitals to her. The woman jumped in her car and drove off, but a police report was filed and Dr. Gerancher was charged with indecent exposure. He was placed on administrative leave on September 16 after the hospital learned of the incident. Not to be one to allow criminal charges and the potential loss of his job get in the way, Gerancher was back out in nature letting it all hang out on September 26, this time back … (Continued…)

NY Pain Doc Arrested: 10 Patients Dead From OD [VIDEO]

Dr. Stan Li

A Queens NY pain management doctor made a practice of peddling prescriptions to addicts and drug dealers, including a man who killed four people in a pharmacy robbery and at least 10 of his patients have died of drug overdoses according to authorities.

Dr. Stan Li wrote more than 17,000 prescriptions – mainly for oxycodone and other highly addictive painkillers – in the last 2 1/2 years at his Queens weekend clinic where he would see up to 120 patients per day. One patient had overdosed numerous times yet Li continued to prescribe him narcotics until ultimately he had a fatal overdose.

Li’s lawyer, Aaron M. Wallenstein, says the doctor denies everything, has acted “responsibly” and “wants to fight this to the end.” Li, 57, is being held on $500,000 bail after pleading not guilty to prescription sale and reckless endangerment charges. Currently the charges all relate to one patient, … (Continued…)

Anesthesia Murder 5th Philly Abortion Clinic Guilty Plea

WILLIAMS

Untrained and originally hired to clean instruments, Lynda Williams, 43, was an unlikely candidate for the position of anesthesiologist anywhere but the Women’s Medical Society, a shop of horrors abortion clinic in West Philadelphia run by a family practice physician, 70 year old Kermit Gosnell. But at the clinic anyone with a pulse could fill the role, with devastating results. Williams pleaded guilty Thursday before Common Pleas Court Judge Benjamin Lerner to counts of third-degree murder involving the 2009 anesthesia related death of a woman undergoing an abortion and the killing of a newborn. She also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to participate in a corrupt organization, and illegally administering drugs to women undergoing abortions.

According to grand jury testimony (click link or scroll down to read) Williams, a 9th grade drop out, had little sense of responsibility in her role and the only licensed health … (Continued…)

Indonesian Court Awards $250k For Botched Nose Job

medical malpractice

Medical malpractice occurs in every country without exception around the world. It may not necessarily be called medical malpractice in a particular location, but medical negligence and mistakes are as universal as human failings and human nature. Precisely what laws and legal remedies specific to medical malpractice are available varies greatly.

By all accounts, pursuing a medical malpractice case in Indonesia is a difficult and arduous process.  A body called the Indonesian Medical Disciplinary Council (MKDKI) has the sole authority to resolve malpractice complaints levied against doctors, hospitals  police.or other medical providers. Complaints are often filed with both the MKDKI and the local police. There exists what has been described as a ‘conspiracy of silence’ in the medical community with physicians unwilling to testify against their peers for fears of legal retaliation. Recently a woman was sued for defamation by a hospital after having emailed her friends about a bad … (Continued…)

Propofol Explained: Factual Expert Answers On Jackson Case

propofol

Law Med has suffered through a number of “experts” appearing on international broadcast media and in print who claim to know all about propofol, its administration, its abuse and addiction potential, while at the same time spouting misstated facts or downright nonsense regarding the drug.

First, to bring some perspective as to why Law Med’s opinions are worth a hill of beans, we must humbly state that Law Med is arguably a national expert on the abuse of propofol, and resultant fatal outcomes, as well as propofol addiction, including incidence, physiologic mechanisms and treatment. Law Med has 2 decades of experience administering anesthesia including propofol, peer assistance advisory experience with a national organization of anesthesia professionals, and has published two peer reviewed medical journal articles on the subject, and has been a national contact person for dozens of calls about individuals in crisis from propofol abuse, overdose and addiction. Law … (Continued…)

Embattled Dr. Midei’s License Revoked by Md. Board of Physicians

Dr. Mark Midei

We have reported previously on the case of a well known Baltimore cardiologist, Dr. Mark G. Midei, accused of preforming unnecessary cardiac stent procedures on possibly hundreds of patients at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Last June we reported on the list of charges filed against Midei by the Maryland Board of Physicians which were serious enough to warrant the revocation of his license if true. On July 13 of this year, after a hearing before an administrative judge where Midei was represented by 9 attorneys, the Board decided to do just that. Citing violations of 5 different provisions of the state Medical Practice Act, the Board found that Midei unnecessarily inserted cardiac stents in 4 of the 5 patients reviewed. They found that the doctor documented coronary artery blockages of 80% when in fact it was much lower and in 3 of the patients charted that they had unstable angina … (Continued…)

Dr. Arafiles Indicted On Felony Perjury

Rolando Arafiles

Dr. Rolando Arafiles, currently awaiting trial on felony charges for his role in the Winkler County Nurse atrocity, has even more to worry about now. Law Med has learned that this past Thursday Arafiles was indicted on by an Andrews County, TX grand jury on aggravated perjury charges for giving false testimony Fecruary 8, 2010 on the witness stand during the trial of Winkler nurse Anne Mitchell. Mitchell was found not guilty by a jury who said they deliberated for 5 minutes before it was clear they all agreed and then chatted about other things because they felt returning in less than an hour would be disrespectful to the lawyers who had worked so hard.

Arafiles answered, “I don’t know, sir,” when asked if he knew how Winker County Sheriff Robert Roberts came to possess contact information for 10 hospital patients who had only been identified by chart numbers … (Continued…)
