Good Riddance to Winkler County Hospital Administrator Stan Wiley

UPDATE: At the August 10 meeting of the hospital board, which lasted all of 1 minute and 14 seconds, sole sane member John Walton made the motion (again) for the removal of Wiley. There was no second and Wiley did the honorable thing and promptly chickened out, withdrew his resignation, and whined like a three year old about how hard it is to be him.

Don’t let the door hit ya…….  Embattled Winkler County Memorial Hospital Administrator Stan Wiley made his own bed when he fired two nurses for blowing the whistle on the king of the quacks Dr. Rolando Arafiles to the Texas Medical Board. The arrogance of he and all of his cohorts have earned them a place as defendants in a civil law suit, an embarrassing criminal trial based on sham charges against the nurses, Texas State fines, and a Texas Medical Board Formal Charging of Arafiles. Arrogance in Winkler County power brokers and law enforcement knows no bounds however and Stan Wiley has taken his sweet time leaving a job he should have been fired from long ago.

Kermit, Texas -Winkler Co. Hospital Administrator to Resign

It appears the “Stan Wiley Era” is coming to an end in Kermit with the hospital administrator expected to resign on Monday, August 9th 2010.

No one is sure why Wiley looks to be resigning but the move is certainly providing home for many, that things can finally begin to improve at Winkler County Memorial Hospital. It could be the massive debt crippling his hospital, his wife’s declining health or his status as a defendant in the civil lawsuit filed against him by the two nurses he decided to terminate, but it’s still unclear exactly why Winkler County Memorial Hospital Administrator, Stan Wiley, will be announcing his resignation.

Beau Berman: “How many times have you motioned for the termination of Stan Wiley?”

John Walton: “Oh… seven or eight”.

Board member, John Walton, has been critical of Wiley’s administration for years. “I think we need somebody from the outside. I think we’re all prone to fall under the status quo and right now that’s not good”, he says.

One of the major problems the hospital’s facing right now is the lack of patients walking through the front doors on a daily basis. In fact, hundreds and hundreds of patients are now going to Monahans to receive their care. That’s why, whenever you look into the waiting rooms, they’re completely empty.

“The economy of the hospital is hurting right now because we lost a lot of patients… a lot”, explains hospital board member, Stefanie Haley.

It’s not that county residents aren’t getting sick. It’s that so many of them are sick of what’s happened at the hospital under Wiley’s watch. After Wiley refused to terminate the mistake-prone, Doctor Rolando Arafiles, he did terminate the two nurses fighting to maintain patient safety. That decision led to the departure of well-respected physician Naomi Warren. With her exit, came the exit of many patients.

Beau Berman: “Would it be wise for a new administrator to see that Doctor Arafiles discontinues his work at the hospital?”

Haley: “I think so”.

Hundreds of thousands in debt, patient problems and other concerns have Wiley’s name written all over them. However, Board President, and publisher of the Winkler County News, Bill Beckham should not be left out. When we came to discuss the hospital’s future this afternoon, Beckham hid in his office while, Stan Wiley, on the other hand hung up the phone in mid-conversation.

Even though now may not be the easiest time to attract a new administrator to Kermit, the addition of two (new) bilingual doctors has Walton optimistic about the hospital’s future.

“It’s just an image thing and it can be overcome. We just need a little confidence in it again”.

Stan Wiley is expected to announce his resignation on Monday. His last day on the job is anticipated to be August 20th, 2010.
