Only days after we reported on Teva withdrawing from the propofol manufacturing business, the only remaining US manufacturer of propofol expands a recall of the product. Hospira Pharmaceuticals had previously announced a recall in March of 2010 of certain lots of thee drug, even while a nationwide shortage was already in full swing. They have now expanded the recall to include additional lots. Propofol, when available, is the most used intravenous induction agent for general anesthesia in the U.S. The nationwide shortage will not end anytime soon. In fact, as things stand now it will only get worse with no relief in sight.
